Strengthening Farmer-Led Irrigation Systems in Southern Tanzania

In the farming communities of Mbeya and Njombe, agriculture shapes daily life and now, farmer groups are working to strengthen their leadership, deepen trust, and build more sustainable systems.

360 Connect Company Ltd, we are proud to continue implementing the AgriGRADE project, funded by IDH – The Sustainable Trade Initiative, with one clear purpose:
To strengthen the governance and long-term sustainability of farmer-led irrigation schemes, farmer groups, and cooperatives.

This is the process of empowering people starting with those who lead.

Why This Training Matters

Farmer groups across Tanzania play a vital role in food security, market access, and rural income. Yet, many face similar barriers:

  • Weak leadership structures
  • Unclear management practices
  • Limited understanding of transparency and accountability

Through AgriGRADE trainings, we’re reaching irrigation leaders and farmer representatives with hands-on capacity building. The sessions are practical, localized, and deeply relevant—touching on:
✅ Democratic leadership
✅ Transparent governance
✅ Resource management
✅ Group sustainability

Some of the irrigation groups we’ve supported include:

  • Gonakuvagogolo Irrigation Group (Mbeya)
  • Herman Irrigation Group (Mbeya)
  • Njombe Irrigators Group (Njombe Region)

These groups represent real communities people actively working to improve how they lead, manage resources, and serve their members. Strong leadership helps them stay organized and focused. Clear governance builds the trust they need to move forward together.

And that’s the kind of shift we’re seeing on the ground. Long-Term Vision

This work isn’t a quick fix. It’s about laying strong foundations that help farmer groups run better—today and long into the future. Our aim is to see irrigation systems and cooperatives grow into self-reliant structures, led by people who are transparent, responsible, and focused on the bigger picture.

With every training delivered, and every group engaged, we’re laying stones on a path toward sustainable, farmer-led development.None of this would be possible without the continued support from IDH and our local stakeholders who believe in empowering rural communities through knowledge and systems.360 Connect, we’re honored to be part of this transformation and we remain committed to walking alongside farmers as they shape their own future.
